About Electrolytic Nickel Electroplating

Nickel is the most widely used electroplated coating with a myriad of applications. Bright nickel is commonly applied in the automotive, electrical, appliance, and hardware industries. In heavy deposits, it offers significant corrosion protection.

For our electrolytic nickel plating services, we offer multiple process types, including those for bright nickel, semi-bright nickel, matte nickel, pure nickel (without organic additives), and bright Watts nickel, allowing us to tailor the finish to the specific performance requirements.

Engineering Applications of Electrolytic Nickel Electroplating

For engineering applications where brightness isn’t a priority, pure, unbrightened nickel is often used as a barrier coat for subsequent plated finishes. Sulfamate nickel, which produces a 99.9% pure, low-stress deposit, is ideal for parts that will be flexed, bent, or crimped.

It allows for thick deposits with excellent stress control, high ductility, and low hardness, and is often used as the base layer prior to plating for added durability and performance. It remains the recommended choice as an underplate for lead-frames, interconnect pins, and glass-to-metal or ceramic-to-metal seals. It is also used as an initial later of plating prior to the addition of gold plating.

High-Temperature Performance

Nickel’s high melting temperature of 2,647 °F (1,452 °C), also makes it suitable for high temperature applications. Common specified standards include:

  • AMS-QQ-N-290
  • ASTM B689
  • AMS 2403
  • MIL-P-27418

Benefits of Industrial Electrolytic Nickel Plating

Along with its flexibility and high-temperature performance, electrolytic nickel electroplating offers a wide range of other advantages that make it a trusted choice for many industries, including:

  • Corrosion resistance – Protects components from rust and environmental wear
  • Wear resistance – Extends part life in high-friction applications
  • Smooth finish – Enhances both performance and appearance
  • Barrier protection – Creates a diffusion barrier – prevents base material from corroding or reacting with outer plating layer
  • Versatility – Works with a variety of base metals and complex geometries
  • Conductivity – Beneficial for electrical applications
